OBS Introduction

Beijing Olympic Broadcasting (BOB) was the host broadcasting organization for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, Beijing 2008. The Games were scheduled for August 8-24, 2008.

BOB was established May 2004, as a joint venture between Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG), to serve as the on-site Host Broadcaster for the Games. In this capacity, BOB was responsible for providing the pictures and images seen by billions of viewers worldwide under the management of OBS.

Ultimately, BOB provided the unbiased international radio and television signals to Rights Holding Broadcasters who have purchased the broadcast rights from the IOC and BOCOG. BOB’s coverage was in full high definition for the first time in Olympic Games history and included more than 3800 hours of coverage.

    Specially, as the Host Broadcaster BOB was responsible for the following:
  • Produce the international television and radio (ITVR) signals of the Games
  • Design, build, install and operate and then dismantle the International Broadcast Centre (IBC)
  • Design, build, install, operate and then remove such facilities and equipment at the competition venues and select non-competition venues other than the IBC
  • Coordinate and provide various facilities and services to the Rights Holding Broadcasters (RHBs)
  • Represent the needs of the RHBs to the Local Organizing Committee regarding a variety of facilities and services
  • Produce various features and maintain an Olympic archival service
  • Assist the Organizing Committee in the design and building of infrastructure needed at the venues to accommodate the needs of OBS and the RHBs
